Seller Insists 1998 Camry Is "Investment Grade," Cites Appreciation of Similar Camrys He Read About Once
In a detailed forum post, the seller outlined his investment thesis, which relies heavily on the assumption that "they don't make them like this anymore" and a Reddit thread from 2021.
The seller of a 1998 Toyota Camry LE listed on Bring The Bids this week has described his vehicle as "investment grade" in the listing title, the listing body (seven times), and in 23 separate comment replies.
His investment thesis, outlined in a 1,400-word forum post published alongside the listing, rests on three primary pillars: (1) "they don't make them like this anymore," (2) a Reddit thread from 2021 in which someone said a similar Camry "could be worth something someday," and (3) the fact that his neighbor's Corolla sold for more than expected last year.
"The market hasn't caught up yet," the seller wrote. "But it will."
The Camry has 187,000 miles, a cracked dashboard, and what the seller describes as "a minor oil situation" that he declines to elaborate on.
The listing is asking $24,500. Comparable 1998 Camry LEs with similar mileage have recently sold for between $3,800 and $6,200.
"Those sellers didn't know what they had," the seller explained when presented with this data. "I know what I have."
Bidding opened three days ago. Current high bid: $4,100. The seller has described this as "a temporary market inefficiency."
